Meet Karen Sue! One of our talented Silk Creation's artists..
Artist Spotlight: Karen Sue Janowiak
Karen Sue Janowiak has always been passionate about arts and she always knew that arts would be a big part of her life. Starting as a teenager, she participated in a junior achievement television show at WNDU in South Bend. Then, due to her interest in dancing and music she joined a Christian dance troop and performed during Catholic services. She absolutely loved it and is still involved in art performances as a volunteer in a South Bend Civic Theater.
She was introduced to St. Margaret’s House about two years ago and after coming in for a few months she found out about the Silk Creations program. Due to her artistic taste in clothes she was approached by one of the volunteers of St. Margaret’s House and was encouraged to apply for the program. After being accepted, she spent all summer learning the techniques of silk painting.
Karen Sue compares silk painting to dancing. “I like the creative flow of it” she says. There is no control system in painting, just mixture of colors. One thing she finds particularly intriguing is how diverse scarves can come out- some of them are very serious and other are whimsical or more eclectic. “And that is a definition of me” she says.
For Karen Sue, St. Margaret’s House is a place she can find spiritual guidance. She loves the diversity of women who come to St. Margaret’s House and finds interacting with them very inspirational. In her future, she wants to be able to keep up with things of artistic nature.. She has an education degree and wants to incorporate her artistic as well as teaching skills to help others learn the art of silk painting.
